Denmark’s Most Beautiful Badminton Hall

Lillerød, Denmark

In the small Danish town of Lillerød, part of Allerød municipality and home to Fritz Hansen for more than a century, stands what locals proudly call Danmarks smukkeste badmintonhal — Denmark’s most beautiful badminton hall, home of Lillerød Badminton Club. Built in 1973, the hall is defined by its soaring vaulted roof. From floor to ceiling, exposed wooden buttresses rise and curve, giving the space a striking rhythmic beauty and impressive atmosphere.

The architectural design is not new to Lillerød. The town’s first badminton hall, built by volunteers and inaugurated on 2 October 1955, shared the same distinctive vaulted roof. Though that original structure no longer exists, its architectural idea lives on in the present hall — a reminder of the community spirit and passion for badminton that has long defined the town.

This year, on 7 November, Lillerød Badminton Club celebrates its 85th anniversary. Few know this history better than Jens Buck-Jensen, Senior Committee Chair and a familiar face at the hall for nearly 40 years.

“Lillerød Badminton Club has a proud history,” he reflects. “In the 1990s we won Danish league titles and three Europe Cup championships in a row. For two decades, players like Jon Holst-Christensen, Ann Jørgensen, Helene Kirkegaard, Sara Runesten, and triple All England champion Tine Rasmussen carried the name of Lillerød far beyond the town’s borders — with this hall at the centre of it all.”

50+ Years in Play

Spectator seating along one side of the hall is built from custom-built modular blocks fitted with Fritz Hansen’s Series 7™ chairs — 232 in total. Many of these chairs are originals from 1973, still standing strong after half a century of international tournaments, league matches and weekend training sessions. Their continued presence is a testament to the value of design that is both beautiful and built to last.

As Jens notes:

“The chairs have outlasted generations of players — we repair them when needed, and they keep going. That’s good design.”

At Fritz Hansen, we believe that longevity is an essential characteristic of good design. The Series 7™ chairs in Lillerød’s badminton hall are proof: original pieces still in use after more than 50 years, cared for and renewed over time. Through our ReNEW programme, we continue this commitment — extending the life of our designs through refurbishment, repair, and spare parts, ensuring they can serve for generations to come.

ReNEW with Fritz Hansen

The Series 7™ chair is built to last for life. As the originals at Lillerød Badminton Hall show, these designs can remain in use for decades — supported by the possibility to repair or replace parts whenever needed. Fritz Hansen also offers commercial clients the option to refresh the colour or finish, allowing each chair’s expression to evolve and complement its surroundings at any stage of its life.
